Telling the big story of Kentucky’s small-town capital city

In November of 2004, the Capital City Museum opened its doors to the public. Housed in a 150 year old building that represents all that is left of the Capital Hotel, which burned in 1917, the museum is a large room filled with history and character. There are plenty of details to explore, with exhibits painting a vivid picture of both political and personal life in Kentucky over the past 200 years.

The Capital City Museum is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Saturday

Admission to the museum is free.

Session 1: Introduction to the Draper Manuscripts

Most of us have heard of this resource for early American Settlement – including Kentucky – but how many have actually used them in our research? The KHS Library has a collection of the Draper Manuscripts on microfilm, but finding the entry you need requires multiple indexes and strategies. This session will introduce you to the resource as well as provide hands-on experience with the various indexes available.

Session 2: The Revolutionary Soldier and “Black Jenny” – A Mystery Revealed Through Supplemental Records

While searching various supplemental records in an attempt to untangle the identity of three wives, a story began to emerge that had been hidden from subsequent generations. Attendees will be taken along the supplemental record journey to see how the story came back to the family and led to a previously unknown branch. We will also learn about the variable nature of supplemental records, and why they might just lead you to further documents.

Free admission. Walk-ins are welcome, but since seating is limited, we strongly encourage pre-registration.

Cheri Daniels is the head of Reference Services for the Martin F. Schmidt Research Library and editor of Kentucky Ancestors Online at the Kentucky Historical Society. She holds a B.A. in history and an M.S. in library science, both from the University of Kentucky. For more than 20 years, she has worked in various types of libraries, including 11 years at the University of Kentucky, and pursued her genealogical passion through her own research along the way. Other roles include: KLA Genealogy/Local History Round Table Chair, DAR Member, PR Director for the Harrison County Heritage Council, blogger at Journeys Past, co-founder/president of Pastology, LLC, and speaker on regional and national stages.

4:00 – 7:00 pm – Salina Solomon, at Talon Winery, Gordon Ln, Shelbyville

Originally from Long Island, New York, Salina began playing the cello at age six after being inspired by her father who sings opera. She started writing her own music by the age of nine on the piano. Things got serious by age 12 when her parents bought her first guitar. She then began to write stories of her world. After studying at Long Island High School for the Arts, she began studying at the Conservatory of Music at the State University of New York in 2009. She had the privilege to also study at the University of Westminster in London. After graduating, she packed up and moved to Nashville where she has begun to build her name as a pop artist. She currently has two EP’s under her belt, “TMI” and “Meet Me In London”. From “TMI”, the song “Unacceptable” Charted number one on VRadio Nashville‘s Top 40 for 14 weeks. In addition, “Somewhere” also charted at number 38. Her second EP, “Meet Me In London” debuted on VRadio Nashville in 2014 and went to number one the first week it was released. Her third EP will be released sometime in 2016. In 2015, Salina was nominated for Songwriter of The Year for the Nashville Universe Awards. She also signed as an artist at the CMA: AT&T U-Verse Fan Fair. She is currently living in Nashville and preparing to record her next album.

Follow the wondrous travels of author Jules Verne’s intrepid Phileas Fogg via Chef Ouita’s fantastic menus during her fourth annual Winter Dinner Series, Around the World in 80 Days!

In the first three months of 2016, the staff of the Holly Hill Inn in Midway will conduct guests on a culinary world tour with guest chefs and exotic stops from London to Paris to Japan and beyond. The schedule is below.
